Trends that might shape enterprise mobile app development in 2015

We’ve seen how enterprise mobile app development has matured tremendously last year, with the emergence of new trends and critical milestones that has put the industry in the news weekly.  This year, you can bet your bottom dollar that there will still be more movement and growth in the mobile enterprise, with the popularity of wearable technology expected to soar this 2015.

So what can we look forward to this year?  Here are a few trends that might shape this year’s enterprise mobility:

The rise of the low-code development platform

Let’s face it:  Hiring mobile app developers is an expensive and, not to mention, a long and rigorous process.  And with the backlog of mobile app projects steadily on the rise, something has to give.  Luckily, this year will see the emergence of “low-code” development platforms, which will finally allow a wide and diverse range of developers (including entrepreneurs themselves) to create their own mobile applications.
Enterprises, too, are also considering ”bimodal” development strategies as a more time and cost-efficient solution to creating mobile apps for their business.  Bimodal development, as described by Gartner Research, is a 2 mode approach, which allows entrepreneurs to either (1) let programmers develop large applications using traditional platforms, or; (2) create the app themselves using high-productivity platforms minus the coding.

The cloud invades mobile enterprise

Call them late adopters, but mobile developers are yet to hop on the cloud bandwagon, as most tools they use still need SDK downloads and require running natively on desktop.
But this could be the year they’ll finally embrace the cloud.  Browser-based app development tools are now fast enough to take on mobile app creation just as well as native OS software!  And the best part is, developers don’t need to install and maintain infrastructures.
With cloud-based models, developers, designers and client-business owners can access the project at the same time with real-time collaboration.

Economics drive the shift towards HTML5 in enterprise app development

Unlike consumer apps, enterprise apps have fewer users, thus requiring a smaller budget.  Hence, there is absolutely no question as to which is a better option between HTML5 and native when it comes to enterprise app development.  In fact, according to Gartner Research, 90% of all enterprise app in 2015 will be HTML5 or hybrid, while the remaining 10% will be native.  And why not?  The benefits of HTML5 in terms of cost, portability across platforms and time to market outweigh the advantages of native development.

In addition, JavaScript frameworks such as jQuery Mobile, faster mobile browsers, and better mobile device hardware can significantly improve the performance of HTML5-based applications.

This is merely a taste of what’s to come this 2015 in enterprise mobile app development.  So brace yourself and keep your eyes peeled for more trends and innovations, if you want to stay ahead of the game.
